Position Title: International Online Photo Editor
Type of Position: Full-time
Location: Toronto
Key Responsibilities
• Select arresting editorial and commercial stock photography from a variety of approved image sources to create a compelling experience and entice users into the application
• Choose smart, compelling visual solutions that effectively and appropriately tell an engaging story
• Source and crop images for planned events and for concepts based on markets requirements, share these images, encourage take-up, monitor and report usage
• Be able to react quickly and creatively to produce dramatic and appropriate images for breaking stories
• Communicate with editors in other countries to alert them to stories being covered by the international team and to new pictures sourced by the international team
• Create buzz by spotting exciting pictures before our competitors.
• Monitor picture wires & social media to ensure we use the latest images fastest
• Handle copyright issues around this image use
• Report regularly
• Adhere to journalistic integrity—timeliness, accuracy, objectivity, narrative, or design integrity as required
• Collaborate with the Editorial team to ensure story and image selection are aligned
• Extract the best visual solution from potentially complex editorial content
• Liaise with channels to ensure best picture quality across the site
• Give timely feedback to editors on image use and coach them as required
• Successfully complete required production for images, including:
• Resizing and cropping images
• Balancing color, levels, curves, sharpness, etc.
• Ensuring clean masks on all photo composites
• Optimizing photos for the Web according to specifications
• Providing correct and succinct photo credits
• Use tracking tools to monitor how users are engaging with images and use these insights to inform future choices
• Develop & document best picture practice for the whole of the newsroom, and update regularly
• Act as a subject matter expert for image queries, advising editors on image use and Photoshop issues, as well as image crediting and registering
• Engage with social media including Twitter, Tumblr, Pinterest through images
• Liaise with Image Acquisitions and international editorial teams to ensure image acquisition rules and procedures are followed, and communicate any changes to the wider team
• Monitor image use across applications, flag any breaches of guidelines and ensure editors are making the most efficient use of image providers
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Proven experience of working on the picture desk of a news organization
- An understanding of international news events, sound news judgment, ability to react quickly to breaking news
- Significant photo-editing experience; emphasis in photojournalism is preferred
- Proven ability to employ effective and creative problem-solving skills in a team environment
- Must demonstrate an ability to spot images before they trend
- Demonstrate a great eye for pictures and how to turn them into stories
- Be able to demonstrate participation in and a love of social media
Technical/Functional Skills
- Proficiency in industry standard editing tools: Photoshop, asset management software and Windows applications
- Copyright and rights knowledge
- Ability to work out of hours as news agenda demands
- Must demonstrate ability to manage picture costs cleverly
Personal Attributes / Interpersonal Skills
- Good interpersonal and communication skill
- Very strong team player but with ability to work on own initiative
- Attention to visual, communication and procedural details
Required Qualifications
- A BA/BS degree or equivalent is preferred
- A portfolio showing samples of work (link to portfolio or work samples is preferred)
