Position: News Online Editor

Location: Montreal

Position Type: Full Time

IFG is looking for a creative, energetic and motivated editor to join the news team, with the end goal of increasing user engagement and providing the audience with a compelling, informative and timely information experience for the #1 portal in Canada. 

Responsibilities

• Must have a passionate and in-depth knowledge of current affairs across a number of verticals including general news, entertainment and finance
• Work under extremely tight daily deadlines and changing priorities.
• Must be prepared to help the Senior Editor and Product Manager develop a long-term editorial vision for the news channel
• Ensure content is accurate and consistent across all news channel departments.
• Recommend content partners that will help to enrich the channel’s content and heighten the level of user engagement.
• Produce special features and microsites that are compelling and timely for our readers, using a variety of content sources.
• Demonstrate a flair for web writing and show confidence with Canadian Press style.
• Successfully utilize social media as an additional entry point for news content.  
• Collaborate with other channel editors to create cross-network content experiences.
• Understand the competition and recommend new initiatives to drive traffic and audience loyalty.
• Help manage a team of freelancers to ensure creative content solutions are developed, our audience is engaged and KPIs are being achieved.
• React quickly to breaking news stories by creating and curating articles, galleries, videos, social media posts and blog entries.
• Have a general understanding of SEO best practices.

Qualifications

• At least two years working within an online editorial environment
• Fluency in Canadian French
• Exceptional editorial judgment with the ability to select compelling stories.
• Experience creating multi-media packages within an online content-management system
• Openness, collaboration and the ability to work in a group setting.
• Ability to work quickly and juggle a number of projects simultaneously
• An eye for detail in packaging, editing, writing and picture selection
• Strong communication skills, both oral and written
• Experience with web editing tools and software, including Photoshop
• Ability to work independently with little supervision
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• Excellent computer skills (MS Office, HTML, etc.)
• Willingness to adapt to changes in the online publishing environment
• A degree in journalism or related field is a must.
